Project Satement:
Acting as a large statement piece consisting of three smaller pieces that fit together (One large centerpiece and two smaller pieces to frame the sides), I am exploring the medium of sumi-ink, ink wash, and NuPastel in my final. Directly tying to my 15 exploration studies, my pieces include different contours of various plants, creating botanical framing with influences from Yun-Fei Ji’s inkwork of plants and nature. In the creation of the botanical line art, I am taking inspiration from Katie Bryant’s process, in which she uses crayons and pastels to create very loose and quick contours as the basis to her floral drawings. The framing consists of the medium found in my 15 studies, that of which being shades of green NuPastel layered overtop dark sumi-ink washes and outlines. Botanical contour is the main aspect I am studying through this project. The other topic I am choosing to explore in my work as a centerpiece is the idea of portals. The primary focus is a self-portrait of me looking into a vanity mirror, in which the outside form is in monochrome ink wash, while the form inside the portal (mirror) is an abstracted version of myself using NuPastels. Throughout the use of different mediums and colors in this piece, I wish to explore the dynamic between monochrome and colorful linework, similarly to how Raymond Pettibon uses blocks and specific areas of very vibrant colors to emphasize messages in his political pieces, as well as how different mediums interact with each other in their juxtaposition.
